Request for Help -- does that sound like I want you to invest money in Nigeria?
#1 son has determined that -- before becoming a professional drifter -- he would like to acquire a degree in folklore. Does your college, or a college known to you, have a program in folklore? Is it a good one? The closest one we know of is at Mizzou, which has the cutest possible name. Do you have any knowledge of this program, or indeed of this school? Do you know what a high school sophomore hoping to get a berth and a scholarship in a folklore program should spend his summer doing, in order to increase his chances?
I am hoping that the power of xanga will help us to find a likely spot for this worthy and deserving kid, so if you know anyone who might know the answers to any of these questions, please send them here. Thank you!

There are several helpful-looking links here: http://www.arts.state.tx.us/folkarts/links.asp?pi=82 .
silken shine had a good one here the one from US News and World Report that classifies by major, finances, aid and everything else you could wish to search for here ...good luck to him...
The thing that comes to mind when you say folklore to me is the big storytelling festival they have in Tennessee in October. I've been looking over the link silken shines sent too and that seems like it has many more contacts in it. But the festival would probably be a good summer/fall thing to go do. Very drifter-ish if anything.
I think there are a lot of graduate programs for folklore, but I dunno about undergraduate programs. Keep it copasetic. Peace.
Sounds like silken shine has some good info. Have you ever heard of the John C. Campbell Folk School? They focus more on the arts and its been around since 1925. I always wanted to go there but haven't been able too. You can go to http://www.folkschool.org if interested. : )
Lol, actually I have not started dressing like a skank, I've just had reoccuring interactions with a certain boy on this campus who is quite possibly the most flirtatious guys around. When i say flirtatious what I mean of course is horny, disrespectful, and yet oblivious.
Mizzou is a fairly good school.... although we at UMR tend to look down on it because its much more of a party school. That and they dare to have something they call an "engineering program" there. But since folklore is a discipline that requires access to good libraries, Mizzou has an incredible set of libraries and access to other libraries all over the globe.
Some of the history and literature classes here at UMR do deal with folklore, but it's just enough to entertain the engineering students who need an upper level humanities course to gradute and not enough for those of us who want more.
